Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
