Comeback Medvedev Claims First Championship in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one victories have been achieved on hard courts

A revitalized Medvedev claimed his first trophy for 882 days with success over opponent Moutet in the Almaty Open final.

The Russian, a former number one, has had a challenging year, achieving just a single victory at the big events and experiencing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his serve in particular - led to him falling of the elite rankings and eventually splitting with long-term trainer Gilles Cervara.

Currently training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has consistently improved in the past month - climaxing in a tightly fought competitive win over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.

It is the player's initial title after the Rome competition and maiden on a hard court after that period of that year.

The win also indicates Medvedev has secured 21 victories at 21 various tournaments.

"For the first time I am participating in a tournament with my both daughters at once, so to win a championship is really nice," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter her name, because the initial championship I achieved when my child Alisa was delivered was for her."

The tennis star, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his last six title deciders, including in that event earlier this year.

Medvedev's defensive approach and frequent reactions on court had led commentators to wonder if his skill to play at the elite level was over.

But the player has implemented adjustments in the last few weeks, attempting to approach the net and perform aggressively, supported by an enhanced service.

The champion came back from a break down in the opening set against the challenging Moutet, taking 4 of the final five points to gain the advantage.

Both players swapped service breaks in the following set before the challenger, bidding for his first ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to create a final set.

He rescued 4 initial opportunities in a competitive deciding set before the Russian broke to that score to secure the win.

Appropriately, the winner earned the win with a point at the net area, with his opponent unable to handle a volley after two hours and 38 minutes.
